Saturday

I shall have a post about Apraxia and Tourette Syndrome this Saturday. Right now, I am kind of busy researching these things.

Alzheimer’s

Sorry about the shoddiness of this post. Next one will hopefully be better.

Well, here’s some information on Alzheimer’s.

It’s a brain disorder in which the patient’s mental functions regress. Meaning that intelligence, reasoning, and memories degenerate. That happens because of the brain cells dying.

Some people think that just plain old memory loss means someone has Alzheimer’s. It doesn’t. Victims of Alzheimer’s suffer from not only memory loss, but difficulties with emotions and language.

Memory loss is the common and most noticeable symptom. Some people may wander around, confused and lost in a familiar setting. Others may repeat stories without ever realizing it. Others are unable to or have a hard time learning new things.

Alzheimer’s can also cause personality changes, depression, and withdrawal from others.

Once somebody has it, they can’t be cured. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s. Despite that, there is medicine that people take to lessen the symptoms.

Most people with Alzheimer’s live six to eight years after diagnoses, although, some have live longer than that.

Since brain cells die, it means the patients die as well.

There are two types of Alzheimer’s. Familial and Sporadic.

Sporadic is the one that most people are familiar with. It attacks people who are sixty-five and older. “A gene called ApoE on chromosome 19 has been pinpointed as being a risk factor for AD.”-Ellen Kuwana.

Familial Alzheimer’s is rare. It affects people who are younger than fifty.

Famous people with Alzheimer’s: Terry Pratchett,  Burgess Meredith, Kay Swift, Mable Albertson, and some others.

To help prevent Alzheimer’s, people are advised to stay active, mentally and physically. So challenge your brain with puzzles, new words, or math. And don’t forget to exercise.

Neurological Disorders.

Next week, I will be focusing on neurological disorders that interest me. I will post my research here.

Changed my address.

Now if only I can change my blog name. I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it.

Greetings

I am Doctor Patrick. I’m not really a doctor, and my name isn’t really Patrick. I just like medical stuff.  In this blog, I will be mostly writing about my research. If anything interesting happens in my life, I’ll write it.

Well, I’m off.
